Sophie – Luxating Patella

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Sophie, last visit
Sophie is a 2 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She was very overweight and was lame on her right hind leg due to a luxating patella. She was lethargic and inactive at home.

Sophie commenced a hydrotherapy programme in combination with altering her diet to exclude titbits. She came for hydrotherapy 2-3 times weekly which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Sophie lost 3 .5 kg in weight and 17 cm around her waistline. She also gained muscle mass on all four legs which helped increase her strength and decrease her lameness. Her activity levels changed dramatically and she was very keen to walk, run and chase balls. Her owner was delighted and most importantly Sophie was no longer lame.

Bella in the treadmill

Bella is a 3 year old working Cocker Spaniel.

Bella prolapsed 3 discs in her lumbar spine and had to have spinal surgery. Her hind quarters were left paralysed and she was even unable to wag her tail.

Bella was an in-patient at Pet Therapy during which time she followed an intensive rehabilitation programme of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy.

Bella began hydrotherapy in the pool and progressed to eventually managing to walk on the treadmill. By the time she left the clinic several months later she was running around with a football again.

Bella standing unaidedBella also had regular osteopathy sessions to help improve the muscle spasm and alignment of her spine.

Her owners were delighted to get Bella back home and Bella was delighted to run in the fields with the two other dogs she lives with.

Alfie – Spinal Injury

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Alfie in hospital

Alfie prolapsed 3 discs in his thoracolumbar spine and underwent major spinal surgery. He suffered a few post op complications with infection which resulted in him being referred to Pet Therapy around 8 weeks post surgery.

On Alfies first visit to Pet Therapy his hind limbs were supported in a pelvic harness held by his owner. Alfie began a rehabilitation programme which involved both physiotherapy and hydrotherapy.

Alfie quickly progressed to being able to stand unassisted and then to walk and run. As he progressed in strength and ability his physiotherapy was adjusted accordingly.

Alfie made a full recovery and still occasionally has a swim session at the clinic just because he enjoys it so much!

Murphy – Multiple Injuries

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Murphy is a 1 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, he was hit by a car while out for a walk. He sustained several injuries which included multiple fractures of his pelvis and damage to the sciatic nerve which supplies the hindlimbs.

Murphy required surgery to repair his pelvis which was plated allowing the fractures to heal. He was given a poor chance of recovery as 3 weeks post surgery, Murphy was unable to stand. This was both due to the fact that his pelvis was still healing and the sciatic nerve damage especially involving his right hind limb resulted in him dragging the limb. Murphy was referred to Pet Therapy for rehabilitation which was his only hope for any chance of recovery.

His rehabilitation programme incorporated intensive physiotherapy and hydrotherapy over a period of four months. He also had some osteopathy sessions and some acupuncture as part of his recovery programme. A specialist orthopedic splint was made and imported from the United States of America to also aid in the rehabilitation of his nerve damaged right hind limb.

Murphy especially loved his hydrotherapy in the pool.

Murphy steadily improved and is now running around back to his normal cheeky self.

The video below shows how Murphy was moving himself around when he started his course of treatment.

The video below shows the remarkable progress Murphy made after his course of treatment. He was definitely ready to go home!
